Wifredo Lam is a Cuban artist well know from is Afro-Cuban Style. Lam had a unique style but had great influence by Picasso. His paintings are excentric and pleasing to the eye. Wifredo Lam’s painting “The Jungle” was started in 1942 and finished in 1944. This painting is known to be his masterpiece. Lam’s style, polymorphism, contrasts different parts of the subject such as humans in this painting. Notice the feet and bums are large where the legs are skinny poles. I like this piece because of the wild colors and the people intermixed in the plants. This is a great, unique style!

Before I even read your blog I thought to myself: wow, how Picasso-like. I agree that his paintings are indeed eccentric and unique, although I didn’t find this one particularly pleasing to the eye at first. The more I looked at it and took in the colors though the more it grew on me. I think it’s ultimately the colors that appeal to me in Lam’s work. You stated that “The Jungle” was Lam’s masterpiece. Why is this? Why is this painting in particular so important? Also, what is polymorphism exactly? Perhaps you could include a little more information on the artist as well, since he is rather well known.
It’s a very nice blog, and I’m particularly fond of your use of the word “bums”.

Picasso’s influence is very apparent when first viewing this picture. I do not care much for the style nor the colors, but it definity draws the eye…tere is so much going on. The feet are kind of creepy, they look like large hands. I am not sure that I would want to look at this piece everyday, but thak you for sharing.

As others have stated, Picasso’s influence is easy to see, but I was curious to know if there was any connection of Lam and Picasso. It seems as though artists tend to be affected and influenced the most by the artists they work around, with or under. Not to say that this is the case seeing that Picasso is probably an artist that everyone knows of. The quality that I most appreciate of the piece is the humor. The abstract qualities make me smile because they are completely absurd.
